A Powerful Mission Statement

"This is your life. Do what you love, and do it often" is how Holstee's mission statement starts. These words fill me with passion and inspiration. How many mission statements do that? Most mission statements describe, but never inspire. They use words like "be the best at..." or "being a leader in the..." They explain the what, not the why. Holstee's mission is different. It answers the question of "why?" powerfully.

It continues...

"If you don't like something, change it. If you don't like your job, quit. If you don't have enough time, stop watching TV. If you looking for the love of your life, stop; they will be waiting for you when you start doing the things you love..."

Holstee's manifesto is so powerful it has gone viral, become a poster, and a inspiration to many, not just their employees.

It ends with...

"Life is about the people you meet, and the things you create with them, so go out and start creating. Life is short. Live your dream and share your passion."

Does your mission:

  • Explain what motivates you and your team?
  • Create energy and passion for your cause? It's a cause, right?
  • Make you proud of what you do and the good it creates?
  • Help you measure the true meaning of your work?
  • Bring out the best in you?

Unfortunately, good mission statements are a rarity.

Question: Is it time to give your mission statement an upgrade?
