These lines by Auden powerfully capture a profound choice – the choice between now and never, between engagement and disengagement, between living and dying.

Auden's sense of living is more than just biology, it's not something that happens automatically. In fact, everything (think resistance) plots to kill it. If we don't take charge of its creation, our life will be controlled by other people and forces. We should not expect anyone to make the choice for us, we must choose to live ourselves. It may be the most important choice we ever make.
